Apple Classroom Gets a Major Update: 5 New Features for Teachers

Apple Classroom's latest update introduces new ways for teachers to manage learning with iPad and Mac, reduce distractions and guide students through digital resources. Here are five changes worth exploring, with practical classroom examples.

1. Lock student Macs to a single app

Teachers can now lock a student Mac into one application to help learners concentrate on the task at hand. For example, during a Keynote storytelling activity, students can stay in Keynote while developing their presentations. Teachers can lift the restriction when it is time to switch activities.

Teaching idea: Use single-app mode for a short period of independent creation, followed by a reflection or sharing activity.

2. Guide website navigation more precisely

Classroom can direct students to a specific website and restrict their browsing, including the option to lock navigation to individual pages. This creates opportunities for focused research, reading and inquiry.

Teaching idea: In a Science lesson on climate change, direct everyone to the same article and ask students to identify three claims supported by evidence before moving to a discussion.

3. Manage Classroom sessions from Safari

The new Classroom extension for Safari allows teachers to start Classroom sessions and manage website navigation without leaving the browser. That can make web-based activities smoother, especially when teachers are presenting and guiding students through online resources.

Teaching idea: Prepare an interactive map in Safari, start a Classroom session from the extension and lead students to the same resource.

4. Follow Along highlights webpage text in real time

Follow Along is a particularly promising addition. In the Classroom extension, teachers can highlight text on a webpage to guide the whole class through the material in real time.

Teaching idea: During a guided-reading lesson, highlight a paragraph, ask students to identify its main idea and then discuss the supporting details. The feature can also support vocabulary work, evidence gathering and close reading.

This is a useful reminder that classroom technology is not only about managing devices. It can support more intentional teaching.

5. Approve camera and microphone permissions

Teachers can approve camera and microphone permissions on students' behalf, reducing interruptions from permission prompts during learning activities.

Teaching idea: When students are making podcasts or recording short video reflections, use this capability to reduce setup friction. Continue to follow school policies on camera and microphone use.

What these updates mean for teachers

Taken together, the new features may help teachers create more focused digital lessons. Single-app mode and website restrictions can reduce off-task browsing; Follow Along can strengthen shared reading experiences; and Safari integration and permission management can reduce the number of technical steps during class.

The most meaningful use of these tools is purposeful rather than restrictive. Teachers can provide structure when students need guidance, then gradually allow more independence.

Requirements before getting started

According to the Classroom release notes, using all Classroom features requires teacher and student devices to be updated to iPadOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 or later, as applicable. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi must also be enabled on both teacher and student devices.

Schools should coordinate with their ICT teams, check device compatibility and test the new functionality before using it in a live lesson.

Try one feature in your next lesson

At iPad For Learning, we encourage educators to start small. Try guiding a class through one webpage with Follow Along or keeping learners focused on a single resource during a short activity. Reflect on what worked, adapt the approach and share your experience with other teachers.
