iPadOS 27 for Education: What’s New and What It Means for the Classroom

Apple has introduced iPadOS 27, bringing a new generation of Apple Intelligence, the new Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, accessibility improvements and performance enhancements to iPad.

But for educators, the most important question isn't simply “What’s new in iPadOS 27?”

It is:

How can these new features support teaching and learning?

At iPad For Learning, we are always interested in what technology enables students and educators to do differently. With iPadOS 27, some of the most exciting possibilities are around inquiry, creativity, accessibility and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Here are some of the iPadOS 27 features educators should be watching.


1. Siri AI: A New Kind of Learning Assistant

One of the biggest changes coming to iPad is Siri AI.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, the new Siri is designed for more natural conversations and open-ended questions. Users will be able to continue conversations, brainstorm ideas and ask follow-up questions.

For education, this potentially changes how students interact with information on their iPad.

How could teachers use it?

Instead of only asking Siri for a simple fact, students could use it as part of an inquiry process.

For example, a student learning about sustainability might ask:


“Why are cities getting hotter?”

Then follow up with:

“How does this affect Singapore?”

And then:

“What are some solutions students could investigate?”

The important learning opportunity isn't simply getting an AI-generated answer.

Teachers can encourage students to question, verify, compare and evaluate the information they receive.

This creates an opportunity to develop AI literacy alongside traditional research and critical-thinking skills.


2. Visual Intelligence: Start Learning From What You See

Visual Intelligence is particularly interesting for inquiry-based learning.

With iPadOS 27, Visual Intelligence can help users learn more about and take action on content displayed on their iPad screen.

For students, this means inquiry doesn't always need to begin with typing something into a search box.

It could begin with something they see.


Try this in the classroom

Imagine students exploring biodiversity.

A student could photograph something during a learning journey, bring the image onto their iPad and use Visual Intelligence as a starting point for investigation.

The learning process could become:

Observe → Question → Investigate → Verify → Explain

Teachers can then challenge students to verify what they discover using additional reliable sources.

This could be especially powerful for Science, Geography, Art, History and outdoor learning activities.


3. Turn Notes Into Learning Resources

Another potentially useful application of Apple Intelligence appears inside Notes.

Siri can work with information contained within typed or handwritten notes and help users take further action.

For example, handwritten lecture notes could be transformed into a more detailed study guide.

For students, this could create interesting opportunities for reflection and revision.


Classroom idea

After a lesson, ask students to review their handwritten notes and use AI to help organise the information.

But don't stop there.

Ask them:

What did the AI identify as important?

What did it miss?

Would you organise the information differently?

Instead of using AI simply to generate a study guide, students are evaluating the AI-generated output against their own understanding.

That is a much richer learning activity.


4. Apple Intelligence Across Everyday Apps

Apple Intelligence in iPadOS 27 isn't limited to one AI application.

Apple is integrating intelligence across familiar apps and experiences including Photos, Messages and Safari.

This is important from an education perspective.

AI increasingly becomes part of the tools students already use rather than something that requires opening a separate chatbot.

For educators, this creates an important opportunity to discuss responsible AI use.

Students need to learn not only how to use AI, but also when using AI is appropriate, when they should rely on their own thinking, and how they can evaluate AI-generated information.


5. New Possibilities for Creative Learning

iPad has always been a powerful creative learning tool, and the latest software updates continue expanding what students can create.

Alongside iPadOS 27, Apple's creative apps are gaining new capabilities. Freeform, for example, is gaining improvements including folders for organising boards and the ability to generate shapes.

For project-based learning, students could use Freeform to:

Brainstorm → Research → Organise → Prototype → Present

Rather than focusing only on the final product, educators can use these tools to make the student's thinking process visible.

That can be particularly valuable in Design Thinking, Challenge Based Learning and collaborative projects.


6. Accessibility Continues to Expand

Some of the most important improvements in iPadOS 27 are accessibility features.

VoiceOver gains richer image descriptions, while a new captioning capability can automatically generate synchronised subtitles for videos and can translate existing captions into other languages.

These features could support students with different learning and accessibility needs, but they can also benefit the entire classroom.

For example, captions can help students follow video content in noisy environments, support language learners and provide another way of processing information.

The bigger lesson for educators is that accessibility doesn't have to be something we introduce only when a student needs additional support.

Designing accessible learning experiences can benefit everyone.


7. A Faster iPad Matters in the Classroom Too

Not every important update needs to be an AI feature.

Apple says iPadOS 27 includes improvements across performance, memory usage, search, display rendering and CPU utilisation.

Apple also says browsing and transferring files from an iPad to an external drive can be up to five times faster.

These improvements might not sound as exciting as Siri AI, but in a classroom with students constantly moving between apps, sharing resources and creating multimedia projects, reducing friction matters.

Technology works best in education when students can focus on the learning rather than the technology itself.


What About Privacy and AI in Education?

As artificial intelligence becomes more deeply integrated into the operating system, conversations around privacy, responsible use and digital citizenship become even more important.

Apple continues to position privacy as a fundamental part of Apple Intelligence, combining on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for requests that require larger models.

For schools, however, technology alone isn't enough.

Students still need guidance around:

  • What information should and shouldn't be shared with AI tools

  • How to verify AI-generated information

  • How to recognise potential errors and bias

  • When AI assistance is appropriate

  • How to acknowledge the use of AI in their work

  • How to maintain their own voice, creativity and critical thinking


AI literacy needs to develop alongside AI capability.


Will Every iPad Get These AI Features?

This is an important consideration for schools.

While iPadOS 27 supports a range of iPad models, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI have higher hardware requirements.

Apple Intelligence features require iPad models with M1 or later, or iPad mini with A17 Pro.

This means a school may be able to update its existing iPads to iPadOS 27 without having access to every Apple Intelligence feature described above.

Educators and school leaders should therefore check both operating system compatibility and Apple Intelligence compatibility when planning learning activities.


iPadOS 27: From New Features to New Learning Opportunities

The most interesting thing about iPadOS 27 isn't any individual feature.

It is what happens when these capabilities become part of a student's everyday learning environment.

Imagine a student who can:

Observe something → Ask questions → Research → Organise information → Create → Reflect → Share

all from their iPad.


AI can support parts of that journey, but it shouldn't replace the thinking happening between those steps.

That may be one of the biggest opportunities iPadOS 27 presents to educators.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into the devices students use every day, our role as educators isn't simply to teach students how to use AI.


We need to help them understand how to think with it, question it and use it responsibly.
